St Clare’s Primary School
“BCE is very proud of St Clare’s Primary School, Yarrabilba and acknowledge the professionalism and creativity of [Enrich Architecture] in delivering a contemporary primary school.”
Mark Allen,
Acting Manager School Development Services
Brisbane Catholic Education.
The essence of the planning of St Clare’s is the centre “community” gathering/Sacred Space representing the campus heart around which are located the smaller “communities” (Learning Clusters).
The Learning Clusters open to a smaller “private” community space which provides a mixture of quiet learning spaces and open gathering spaces which allows for maximum flexibility for different uses.
The gathering/Sacred Space is intended to be visible from all rooms within the Learning Clusters to reinforce the sense of community reflecting the indigenous heritage of the area. The communal gathering space is encircled by a pedestrian spine which is crucial to the communities “connectivity” or sense of “one”.

DESIGN FEATURES

Enhance community interaction, provide a variety of options for social engagement

As the school grows and middle and senior learning clusters are developed, the flexible internal partitioning allows the spaces to open to common learning spaces within the year groups.

The school buildings are of domestic style and scale, incorporating design features of local vernacular. The buildings are highly articulated with a modern material palate.

Awareness of Environment
Care for the environment in which the school is located is a critical element of the Education Brief requiring a whole school approach to educating for sustainability by implementing visible Environmental Sustainable Design solutions, promote stewardship of the local environment.
The religious identity and culture is subtly incorporated using symbols, the provision of sacred and reflective spaces within the learning spaces and the outdoor areas.
The flexible nature of the learning clusters support the personalised, active and interactive learning program expected of BCE which is enabled through learning environments that enhance teachers’ pedagogical capacity.
Educational spaces are not limited to the classroom as spaces outside and adjacent to the formal teaching space are important to the delivery of positive learning environments. Flexible outdoor breakout spaces and learning areas have been incorporated in to the design for social and gathering spaces, spaces for the individual and outdoor collaborative learning areas.
