Ozcare Aged Care Facility, Hervey Bay

Ozcare over the past five years has engaged with [Enrich Architecture] to challenge the design of our new aged care facilities with a clear focus on the well being and care of our residents

Ozcare’s 154 bed Aged Care Facility in Hervey Bay was developed in response to an identified need for housing for elderly persons within the Fraser Coast local area. The three story facility has delivered a new style of building for Ozcare with connection and enhancing linkage to the local community and to the adjacent Reflections on the Bay Retirement Village by Ozcare, and an effective integration with the existing local community.

The building design has been inspired by the Fraser Coast natural environment, from the coloured sands at Fraser Island to the glistening waters of the bay. The building has been oriented in a way that you can take in all aspects of the beautiful surrounding landscape as you walk throughout the facility and connects and extends to the outdoor environment enhancing movement and open space networks.

DESIGN FEATURES

Asset 6

Legibility of Form
Recognisable environment with an emphasis on homely spaces to encourage participation and reminiscing

Asset 9

Spaces That Nurture
Public and private spaces designed to support the wellbeing of the staff and residents both internally and outdoors

Asset 10

Connectivity and Socialisation
Spaces have been designed to enhance community interaction and provide a variety of options for social engagement

Asset 11

Sense of Place
Homelike places of familiar vernacular to give a sense of belonging

The overarching focus of client care and well-being were the principles behind the design of the facility. The importance of providing space for family interaction, fostering friendships with fellow residents by providing multi-purpose and gathering spaces and specific areas for encouraging involvement in activities to be socially connected was paramount.

The facility provides a sense of home with the layout and finishes. The resident rooms have been specifically designed to allow for residents to ‘age in place’ delivering continuity and familiarity; the residents can continue to reside in the same room even as the level of care they require changes. This design philosophy is consistent with current best practice in aged care.
